Transfers Continue

29 04 2008

Trey Dunmon
Trey will be transferring to Georgia Southern. I’m not sure if this purely a football move or if it is also an academic move as well. Transferring to a FCS school he will not have to sit out a year. I’m sorry that he is leaving and we wish him the best as an Eagle.

This means that the Center position is extremely thin. Dan Voss most likely moves into the starting position. Unless there are some moves, which there probably will be, then it is walk-ons behind him. Nick Mcrae comes in next year and he may get playing time very quickly due to the lack of depth.

Taylor Bennett
We’ve actually known about this one for quite some time now, but Taylor has announced that he will be a Bulldog. No, not that kind. He will go to one of my good friend’s alma mater, Louisiana Tech. I don’t know the situation there, but I would imagine he would get some significant playing time there next year. He doesn’t have to sit out due to the fact that Tech does not have the same graduate program that he will be enrolling in at Louisiana Tech. Taylor’s time here at Tech didn’t really work so well, but he was always a high character kid that people loved to be around. I wish him the best as a Bulldog at another Tech.

On another note, the ball has started rolling on some of the improvements for In The Edge. I have contacted GT licensing so hopefully we will be able to use official GT logos on the new site. I also am beginning the process of putting together some of the visuals and code together. I’m getting several opinions on the best way to approach the hosting and domain registration since we will probably need a lot of space with the ideas we have for ITE (think multimedia). If you have any ideas or suggestions as far as this is concerned please leave them in the comments. Thanks.

Draft Notes

28 04 2008

The brunt of my schoolwork is now done!! If anyone wants an ACM formatted paper on Office Communications and the effect their evolution has had on the Software development process just send me an e-mail. Otherwise, the NFL Draft was this weekend and here’s how it went down for our Jackets.

Drafted

Philip Wheeler
Indy is hoping that Phil Wheel is the real deal and drafted him 93rd overall in the 3rd round. This should be a good spot for him as the Colts just lost a few linebackers and this is a position of need for them. His speed is his weak point, but he does have good size and tackling ability. He should prove to be a good, probably not great, outside LB that can stuff the run and blitz off the edge when needed.

Tashard Choice
Deuce went a few spots lower at the 122nd spot in the 4th round to Dallas. He was drafted as insurance against the future loss of Marion Barber. Felix Jones was taken in the 1st round, but is seen as a change-of-pace back and not an every-down kind of guy. TC is probably going to be the true backup to MB3.

Durant Brooks
Honestly, I’m kind of surprised he lasted this long. Washington really needed a punter so they took him with the 168th spot in the 6th round. In all likelihood, Durant will be the starting punter for the Skins. I look forward to seeing him boot some in the nations capital. Although, there’s some other things I’d like to see him boot in D.C. too, but that’s irrelevant to this discussion.

Undrafted Free Agents

Darrell Robertson
Robo signed with the Cowboys. He is a good character kid who is a tweener. He’s not big enough to play DE, but is also a marginal LB. Let’s hope he proves himself and stays in Dallas with Deuce.

Gary Guyton
Scary Frightenin’ Gary Guyton went to the 49ers. Gary will probably get a decent shot at OLB. That would be a very athletic LB core there in San Fran with Patrick Willis and GG.

Mike Cox
Bull decided on continuity and went with Gailey to the Chiefs. This is probably a good move for him as Gailey really likes him and will definitely give him a chance. I personally believe Mike can be a very good fullback in the NFL.

Adamm Oliver
I have not heard anything on the Machine yet. If I hear anything I’ll update this post.

Update: 4-29-08
Kevin Tuminello & Nate McManus
These two have signed on with the Saints.

I wish all these guys the best and can’t wait to see them playing on Sundays this year.

The Expansion Begins…

25 04 2008

Well, as In The Edge begins its transition into bigger and better things the first improvement has occurred. Please welcome Matt Stigall to the In The Edge family. In true ITE fashion, Matt does video for the football team. He is one of the guys recording practices, and games and also helping put together some of the fantastic videos you see at GT sporting events and on Ramblin’ Wreck.

Matt has been added as an author and will soon be posting his own posts to contribute to In The Edge. This will bring you more GT news and analysis from another source on the inside. This should also cut down on some of the down time brought on by my school/work schedule. Regardless, it is the first move of many to make In The Edge one of the best GT resources out there.

Matt and I have been discussing the possible future of In The Edge and we have some really good ideas that I assure you will be incredibly entertaining when they are implemented. As stated before, some of the transitions will take place over the next couple of weeks. This summer we will be polishing up our coding skills and one-by-one begin to add some exclusive features that only In The Edge can provide. While the blog aspect will remain, In the Edge is making its transition to a more fully-featured website that will be much more than a blog. There also may be a few more additional contributors that jump on as well so I will let you know as it happens.

Again, please leave Matt some welcoming messages in the comments. If you are feeling generous and would like to help out with some of the financial aspects of the transition please click the Donate link on the right (setup through Paypal). Thanks and we can’t wait to start unveiling the new features in the coming months.

ACC Coaches Teleconference: Paul Johnson Audio

23 04 2008

Thanks to Scott over at the Georgia Tech Sports Blog for tipping me off to this audio. I was going to recap it, but it’s much more enjoyable to listen to coach talk about the team. Enjoy!

T-Day Report

23 04 2008

Sorry this is late, but I’ve been buried up to my neck in schoolwork. Anyways, better late than never I guess.

1. Offense is extremely shaky right now. Fumbles are all over the place and nothing ever really looked that smooth. However, this probably to be expected with such an “alien” offense just being implemented and only practiced for a few weeks.

2. Josh Nesbitt. I know this hard to say from what was seen at T-Day but I still think he is going to be a very good QB for us. It looked like a lot of his mistakes on T-Day came from a lack of experience with the offense and not his ability. Let’s give him some time and he will probably be a monster in CPJ’s spread offense.

3. D looked pretty darn good. Our D-line might be one of the best in the nation. Linebackers are inexperienced but talented. D-Backs are inexperienced, but I feel as though they are more comfortable with the style of play Wommack is having them play.

4. Surprise of the spring is Bryce Dykes. He looked pretty good running the offense and could prove an adequate backup. Kind of came out of nowhere for many of us.

5. Where the heck were the new uniforms? I’m not surprised that the players did not wear them, but I though they might at least show them off. Oh well, I’ll bring news on this front as soon as I have it. (I’ll get in touch with my connections in the equipment management department.)

6. (This is not the Hive.) Kudos to D-Rad and crew for putting together a fan-friendly day. There were some complaints about the concessions and such but overall it was much more enjoyable experience than in years past. It actually felt like an event instead of watching another practice. I hope we continue this tradition.

7. If Jonathon Dwyer can keep the ball in his hands and not on the ground he is going to be very good. He pulled off a few good runs and would have had a couple more if he would have held on to the ball. He has size and speed that is very good and will be dangerous for opponents to defend.

8. A-backs. I like this position. We didn’t get them involved very much on T-Day but they had some good gains when they were. Jamaal Evans ripped off an impressive 40+ yard touchdown on one of the plays.

9. Passing. It’s here and there. Booker seems to be the best passer, but has a more difficult running the ball as he gets absolutely destroyed by defenders. Josh had some good passes, including a long gain by Correy Earls, but also overthrew a lot of balls out of bounds.

10. Don’t take too much from T-Day. Both sides have had three weeks to practice new philosophies and it’s still pretty new to everybody. There are certainly going to be some growing pains this year but I think you will see improvement as we progress through the year. I wholeheartedly believe Coach Johnson will have us where we want to be in 2-3 years.

On another note, I apologize but I was unable to get pictures from T-Day. I went to get my camera on Friday and Best Buy dropped another deuce on customers with their terrible customer service. They told me they would honor a coupon I had with their sales price on the camera. Of course when I go to buy the camera they say they can only honor one or the other (a difference of 30-40 bucks). After the lame excuse of the computer can’t do it and everyone behind the customer service counter completely incapable of performing some simple math I told them I could get it cheaper somewhere else and left frustrated. I ordered the camera off of NewEgg.com and got the camera+shipping and a 2GB memory card for less than what Best Buy was offering me for the camera alone.. This is not the first time I’ve been pissed off with Best Buy as I bought a PC game before that somehow was missing the setup file so I couldn’t even install it. When I tried to take it back they wouldn’t even let me exchange it for the SAME game. Moral of the story: Don’t ever make a “big” purchase from Best Buy. I do have my camera now and I hope to bring you some of my shots from GT events I attend.

T-Day: More Details (Juicy Ones)

17 04 2008

Here’s some more details that came from Adamm Oliver’s radio show the other night.

  1. The unveiling of the uniforms will happen as the players will actually wear them for the game. Should be interesting
  2. The white team will include the first team O (Nesbitt) and the second team D.
  3. The blue team will include the second team O (Booker/Dykes) and first team D
  4. Coach Johnson will simply watch and will not coach either side. From a manager on the team, Coach Bohannon and Coach Monken will most likely call the plays.

I am going to get my new camera tomorrow so hopefully I will get a chance to try it out on Saturday and I can have some pictures for everyone to see. Hope to see everyone there!

Big Changes Coming!

17 04 2008

So I started In The Edge as just a fun thing for me to express my opinion and thoughts on GT Sports. It has been much more successful than I would have imagined and I would like to continue that trend of success. That’s why I’m announcing the beginning stages of some big changes coming for the blog.

Over the next couple of weeks (after I finish up all my school projects) I will be setting everything up to move the blog over from this free version to one that will use the WordPress.org format. I will be getting my domain name and hosting services from GoDaddy to help with this move since I have had good experiences with them in the past. The blog’s address will change also and I will keep everyone updated as to what it will be as soon as I get it set up.

This move will give me much more freedom with what I want to do with In The Edge. It will also allow me to do a lot more changes to the look of In The Edge so that it will look much nicer and have better navigation around the site. It will also give me the opportunity to add some features the free version of WordPress does not. The move will give me a few more tools on the backend that will also make my job a little easier. The actual move should take place within 3-4 weeks and then my summer project is to make In The Edge one of the best looking and feature-filled GT sports sites you can find.

Now comes the problem. This move does cost a little bit of money. It’s nothing really expensive or anything, but if you would like to help out a little with the costs then please click the Donation link on the right. I have set it up through PayPal so that I know it is completely secure. Anything (even just a couple of dollars) you can throw towards offsetting the costs would be much appreciated and I can guarantee that you will like the results.

Thanks everyone and I will have a post T-Day game report up this weekend! Go Jackets!

T-Day Game

15 04 2008

You better bee there! This is the first time we’ve run an actual game in quite some time. Should be an interesting look at Coach Johnson’s spread offense. Hope to see everyone there. Here are the details from RamblinWreck.com

Admission: No charge.

Parking: The Georgia Tech Campus Parking and Transportation office is charging $5 for parking in all lots on April 19th. Parking at Alexander Memorial Coliseum is reserved for the ACC Track and Field participants and officials. No T-Day Game parking will be allowed in this lot.

Seating: Lower level seating in the East, West and North stands. Enter through Gate 1, 4, 5, or 7.

Concessions: Concession stands will be open in the east and west seating areas. Concession vendors will also be open for business on Callaway Plaza near Gate 7 before kickoff of the Spring Game.

Pre-game Activities: Activities for kids run from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. outside the stadium on Bobby Dodd Way. A DJ will play music and lead games for kids and adults. Face painters, inflatable games, a giant inflatable slide, a golf driving cage and more will all be part of the festivities.

The marching band, cheerleaders and Ramblin’ Wreck will all be on hand. Several Georgia Tech football legends will be interviewed on the sidelines during the game and shown on the video board.

And thank you to all the visitors of In The Edge. This site has gone over 10,000 views in just a matter of a few months. Don’t forget to tell your friends about the blog and send me any ideas you have for features and improvements.

Lunch Bunch with Coach Paul Johnson

14 04 2008

I was really planning on attending this, but I just had too many things to take care of in the office and with school today. Fortunately, we have a good report from the event. I know I probably link to things on the Hive too much, but I’m an avid reader of it and it quite often has some really good information (if you know who to listen to). Everytime I hear something that Coach Johnson says I feel more and more comfortable with him as the leader of our football team. So, without further ado I give the report from the Lunch Bunch.

Lunch Bunch Report with Coach Johnson

Edit (April 15):
One great bit that came from reports is that Joe Hamilton is now on staff!! He is the Assistant Director of Player Personnel so he will likely be helping out with Liam Klein’s duties. This is great news and will almost certainly give us a boost in recruiting. Also, here’s an even more in-depth report from the Lunch Bunch.
